Pause, Before Doing Anything Online

Today, childhood happens in two worlds at once. The internet is no longer a place children visit after school. For a generation growing up online, it is simply the room they grow up in, and it doesn’t come with the safety habits we’ve spent a lifetime building offline.

Join CRY’s movement to build safer online experiences for every child.

113 million children in India are navigating the online world today (CIET, NCERT, 2025).

1 in 3 adolescents has experienced a harmful online incident.

Based on a CRY survey conducted in 2020.

Why Children Need Online Safety?

A digital generation deserves digital safety.

Today's children are growing up online. They learn, play, connect and explore in digital spaces every day. In India, children make up around 14% of all internet users and spend anywhere between 1.5 and 6 hours online daily (CIET, NCERT, 2025; NITI Aayog, 2025).

Just as we teach children to cross the road safely or be cautious around strangers, they also need to learn how to navigate the digital world with confidence. Yet, reported cybercrimes against children have risen nearly twenty-fold since 2017, reaching 1,753 cases in 2024 (NCRB, 2024). Like many crimes against children, however, these numbers are only the visible tip of the iceberg.

The good news? Online safety isn't about fear - it's about habits. Small, everyday actions can help children pause, think and stay safer online. And, like every good habit, these can be learned.

The Big Idea: Ting Tong! Pause Before Doing Anything Online

In the real world, we instinctively pause before crossing the road, trusting a stranger or sharing something personal. The online world deserves the same instinct.

Ting Tong is a simple mental cue: Pause before clicking, sharing, responding or trusting anything online.

A brief pause can lead to safer choices and better outcomes.
