Lucent Technologies to celebrate their Global Day of Caring chose CRY – Child Rights and You, an Indian charity for children as their beneficiaries. Swindon team competed against the rest of Lucent Technologies, U.K. team on 11 June, 2005 in support of underprivileged children in India.
The two teams kicked off the tournament at 11.30 am in what was a warn summer day. Swindon team won the toss and elected to field. The U.K. team got off to a good start with a strong batting performance by one of the team’s player Mehul, who remained not out at 28 runs. But Swindon’s team member Asad’s excellent bowling restricted the batting team to 111 all out.
Swindon team got off to a flying start with excellent batting by Asad who remained not out at 26 with 3 fours and 1 six. With a good batting performance by the middle order batsmen Swindon won the match by 3 wickets.
Lucent Technologies raised £3000 from this tournament. This much-needed resource will go towards Mahita, a CRY-supported initiative in Hyderabad, India for the next four months with special focus on the issue of the girl child. The project works towards ensuring 1750 children are enrolled into school, 540 children are rescued from the bondages of child labour, impart vocational training and livelihood skills to around 250 adolescent girls. Thus ensuring children especially girl children are rescued from child marriage and from being dragged into sex trade.
